Eric Metaxas spoke in Charleston on January 15th and 16th. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. He also has written three other books, including Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, also a New York Times bestseller, but in his two lectures he focused on Bonhoeffer.

As Metaxas spoke about the incredible life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, he described Bonhoeffer's insistence that the church needed to listen for and to obey the voice of our Lord in order to respond to the challenges posed by Hitler and the Nazis. It was precisely Bonhoeffer's ability to hear the Word of God that enabled him to have such a prophetic role, one that ultimately led to his execution.

Metaxas appreciates the witness to Jesus Christ of men and women who have lived in a way that was shaped and guided by their faith with courage and conviction. In his book on William Wilberforce, Metaxas shares the story of how Wilberforce's faith in and obedience to Jesus Christ led him to work so tirelessly for decades to end the slave trade in the British Empire.

The day of the second lecture by Metaxas was January 16, the day we celebrate the birth of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I found it ironic that Dr. King was not mentioned during the gathering. No one asked a question or connected the witnesses of Wilberforce and Bonhoeffer with that of King. We missed an opportunity.

But more than that, we also missed an opportunity to reflect together on the identify and voice of God's prophets today and the ways in which we might hear and respond to God's call. Instead, the conversation shifted to the ways in which Christians can engage culture. Certainly, the prophetic role of the church is one way, but unfortunately that was not the focus of the conversation. Was this just another opportunity missed, or perhaps something deeper? Perhaps our conversation bore witness to the difficulty we have in hearing God's prophetic voice, especially when God calls us to take up our cross and follow Jesus.

Who are God's prophets today? In what ways are they calling us to obey the Word of God, Jesus Christ?

12. Do something really nice – that no one knows about.

11. Spend more money on other people than I spend on myself. Love my neighbor as I love myself. And love myself as I love my neighbor.

10. Laugh often… especially at advertisements that try to convince me that I must buy more stuff in order to be happy.

9. Learn a new life skill – like carpentry, pottery, or canning vegetables. Teach someone else I life skill I know how to do.

8. Love a few people well, remembering that what is important is not how much we do but how much love we put into doing it.

7. Write a letter to someone I need to say thank you to. Write another letter to someone I need to ask to forgive me.

6. Track down a critic or someone I disagree with and take them to lunch. Listen to them.

5. Compliment someone I have a hard time complimenting… and mean it.

4. Choose life. Do something regularly to interrupt the patterns of injustice – do something to end violence, bullying, war, capital punishment and other mean and ugly things.

3. Pause before every crisis and ask “will this matter in 5 years?”

2. Get outside often and marvel at things like fireflies and shooting stars. And regularly get my hands into the garden… so when I type on the computer I can see dirt under my fingernails.

1. Believe in miracles. And live in a way that might necessitate one.

¡Cómo me gustaría a veces tener a Jesús tan cerca de mí como lo tenían los discípulos aquella vez, para que me pueda también a mí hacer entender Las Escrituras! Tantas cosas hay que no logro a veces entender. Y cuando la gente me pregunta sobre el significado de textos que yo misma no comprendo, siento que estoy fallando con mi misión evangelizadora.

Estoy seguro de que muchos de ustedes se sienten igual. Jesús mismo se sentó junto a Sus discípulos y les hizo entender las Escrituras. Si a ellos les ayudó penetrar a las Escrituras por esta puerta, confío que también a nosotros nos puede ayudar. Nada puede ser más importante que el milagro de resurrección. Si realmente creemos que con ella comenzó para nosotros una nueva vida, por supuesto que todo debe ser interpretado desde allí. Entonces todos aquellos textos que hoy nos molestan porque no logramos entenderlos deben ser releídos con ojos iluminados por el milagro de la muerte y resurrección de Cristo.

ORACION: Te pedimos Señor, que nos ayudes a creer en el milagro de tu muerte y resurrección. Te pedimos que nos abras los ojos para comprender todo lo que sobre ti está escrito. Amén.

Luke 24:44-45

How I would love at times to have Jesus as close to me as the disciples had him that time, so that he could help me as well to understand the Scriptures! There are sometimes so many things which I am unable to understand. And when people ask me the meaning of texts which I myself do not understand, I feel like I am failing in my evangelical mission.
I am sure that many of you feel the same. Jesus himself sat next to His disciples and made them understand the Scriptures. If they were able to penetrate the Scriptures through this door, I trust that He can help in the same way. Nothing surpasses the importance of the miracle of the resurrection. If we truly believe that because of it our lives have begun anew, then of course everything else should be interpreted from that point. And then all of those passages which bother us because we are unable to understand them, should be reread with eyes enlightened by the miracle of the death and resurrection of Christ.

PRAYER: Lord, we ask you to help us to believe in the miracle of your death and resurrection. We ask that you open our eyes so that we can understand everything that has been written about you. Amen.

Muchos de nosotros tratamos de mantenernos lo mejor posible física y mentalmente. El ejercicio debe ser regular, y de acuerdo a nuestras posibilidades. Para mantener nuestras mentes alertas, leemos o resolvemos problemas. El mensaje sutil que se esconde detrás de nuestros esfuerzos es: "Si no lo usas, lo pierdes" Todos nosotros hemos recibido varios dones y habilidades de Dios. Los artistas cristianos y los músicos producen obras que podemos ver y oír. Pero algunos talentos están más escondidos. Dios le ha dado a cada persona algún don que puede engrandecer Su Reino. En Romanos 12:6-8 se menciona el servir, el enseñar, el animar, el contribuir a las necesidades de otros, el liderazgo, y el mostrar misericordia. Reflexione sobre estos dones. Usted puede descubrir uno o más talentos escondidos que puede ejercitar para beneficio de otros. En 1ra de Corintios 13, San Pablo describe el mayor don: el amor. Los cristianos recibimos este don cuando, siendo pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros. El amor por otros es nuestra respuesta a Dios por Su gran amor por nosotros.

ORACION: Señor, perdónanos por no usar nuestros dones como debiéramos. Ayúdanos a encontrar maneras de demostrar más amor. Amén.

GOD GIVES YOU GIFTS
MATTHEW 25:14-21

Many of us try to maintain the best possible physical and mental health for ourselves. We exercise as regularly as possible. We read and problem-solve in order to keep our minds alert. The subtle hidden message behind our efforts is: "If you don't use it, you lose it." Each of us has received various gifts and abilities from God. Christian artists and musicians produce works that can be seen and heard. But some gifts are more hidden. God has given each person a gift that can enhance His Kingdom. Romans 12:6-8 mention the gifts of service, teaching, encouragement, contributing to the needs of others, leadership, and showing mercy. Let us consider these gifts. You may discover one or more hidden gifts which can be used for the benefit of others. In 1 Corinthians 13, Saint Paul describes the greatest gift: love. Christians received this gift when, being sinners, Christ died for us. Love for others is our response to God for His great love toward us.
PRAYER: Lord, forgive us when we do not use our gifts as we should. Help us to find ways to demonstrate more love. Amen.

¡Con cuánta frecuencia las experiencias amargas de la aflicción y el dolor colocan un hierro en nuestras vidas y afilan nuestra comprensión de los verdaderos valores de la vida! Cuando todas las cosas van bien, parece que servimos a Dios por Sus excelentes recompensas. Pero tarde o temprano el dolor llega. A veces el desastre nos toma desprevenidos . Quizás hayamos dicho: "Eso no pudo sucederme a mí". Pero sucedió, y no hay explicación inmediata. El salmista escribió: "Estando en angustia, me hiciste ensanchar". Nuestras experiencias atormentadoras en los conflictos pueden atarnos con cadenas. Podemos ver por primera vez que nuestros hermanos llevan también una pesada carga muy parecida a la nuestra, y entonces somos más solidarios y más amorosos. La Biblia nos habla de José, el muchacho que soñó tener autoridad sobre sus hermanos, pero Dios le requirió que pasara por la experiencia del calabozo para hacerlo su administrador y conservador de alimentos de confianza. José aprendió la voluntad de Dios a manos de las malas intenciones de sus hermanos. Hermanos y hermanas, Dios permita que aprendamos a ver Su rostro en las sombras de la vida, que aprendamos que cuando la tormenta es más furiosa, Él está allí, que aprendamos también que todos los eventos, buenos o malos, los usará para nuestro bien si permanecemos firmes y consagrados en Sus caminos y propósitos, y que aprendamos que el cristiano hace más en sonreír y sobrellevar la carga.
ORACION: Oramos como los caminantes de Emaùs: "Quédate con nosotros, porque se hace tarde". Amén.

How often do the bitter experiences of suffering and pain place a sword in our lives which sharpens our understanding of the true values in life! When everything is going well, it seems that we serve God for His excellent rewards. But sooner or later comes the pain. Sometimes disaster takes us unawares. We may have told ourselves: "That can't happen to me." But it happened, and there is no immediate explanation. The psalmist wrote: "Through my suffering, you made me grow." Our painful experiences in times of conflict can tie us down in chains. For the first time we can see that our brothers and sisters also carry a burden very similar to ours, and then we become more empathetic and more loving. The Bible tells us the story of Joseph, the young man who dreamt that he would have authority over his brothers, but God made him experience incarceration in a cell in order to make him His administrator and trust conservationist of all food. Joseph discovered God's will through the evil intentions of his brothers. Brothers and sisters, God allows us to see His face in the shadows of life, so that when the storm is at its worst, we can know that He is there. And so that we can also learn that every situation, good or bad, will be used for our good if we remain firmly dedicated to following Him and His purposes. And that we may learn that the Christian who smiles and who endures his burden is the one who does the most good.
PRAYER: We pray as did the men on the road to Emmaus: "Stay with us, because it is late." Amen.

"El reino de Dios es como un tesoro escondido en un terreno"

Mateo 13:44

Si un fuego estuviera por destruir tu casa, ¿Qué posesiones materiales tratarías de salvar? Algunos tomarían un recuerdo familiar, joyas, dinero o fotografías. Lo que tratamos de salvar refleja lo que valoramos. Sin embargo, por más valor que le demos a nuestro tesoro, este no puede darnos felicidad eterna. Con el tiempo también se perderá. El Reino de los Cielos es el tesoro que nunca perderán aquellos que están en Cristo. El Reino de Dios viene a nosotros por medio de La Palabra del Evangelio, cuando el Espíritu Santo crea en nosotros la fe en Cristo Jesús, nuestro Salvador.
¿Qué valor tiene este tesoro? El hombre de la parábola vendió todo por obtenerlo. Él sabía que nada de lo que poseía era más importante que la abundancia de las riquezas de Dios en Cristo, y esto poseyó su corazón y cambió su vida.
Al considerar todo lo que valoramos comparémoslo con el tesoro eterno del Reino de Dios. Es la "Corona de la vida" (Ap. 2:10), comprada con la muerte y resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesús. Es el tesoro incorruptible en el que podemos poner toda nuestra confianza. Es el tesoro que será nuestro por toda la eternidad.

ORACION: Señor Jesús, llénanos del gozo de conocer tu Reino y tenerte a ti como nuestro mayor tesoro. Amén.

MATTHEW 6:19-24
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field."
Matthew 13:44

If a fire were to destroy your house, which of your material possessions would you try to save? Some of us would take a family heirloom, jewelry, money or photographs. What we try to salvage reflects what we most value. Nonetheless, no matter how great the value we give our treasures, they cannot give us eternal happiness. They, too, will be lost eventually. The Kingdom of Heaven is the one treasure that will never be lost by those who are in Christ. The Kingdom of God comes to us through the Word of Gospel, when the Holy Spirit creates faith in Christ Jesus, our Savior, within us.

How much is this treasure worth? The man in the parable sold everything in order to obtain it. He knew that none of his possessions was more important than the abundant riches of God in Christ, and this took over his heart and changed his life.

When we consider what we most value, let us compare it to the eternal treasure of the Kingdom of God. It is the "Crown of life" (Revelation 2:10), bought with the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. It is the imperishable treasure in which we can place all our trust. It is the treasure which will be ours for all eternity.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, fill us with the joy of knowing your Kingdom and of having you as our greatest treasure. Amen.

1ra de Juan 5:14-15

La palabra latina "veto", que significa "me opongo", designa el derecho reconocido a una autoridad de oponerse a la decisión tomada por otra autoridad. En la Roma antigua, los magistrados, llamados tribunos de la plebe, podían oponerse, bajo el derecho de veto, a los decretos del Senado de los Cónsules. Si la autoridad investida con ese derecho es sabia y justa, hay garantía de buen gobierno; pues así son impedidas las medidas peligrosas para el Estado o las personas. Pero por encima de todos, existe una autoridad que el creyente reconoce gustoso: la de Dios, su Padre. Él no sólo es justo y sabio, sino soberanamente bueno y lleno de amor por Sus hijos. Cuando estos oran, pueden estar seguros de que toda petición hecha según la voluntad de su Padre será oída. Tienen Su Palabra para conocer esa voluntad, y el Espíritu Santo que los conduce. Él "ayuda nuestra flaqueza: porque no sabemos orar como se debe; pero el Espíritu mismo hace intercesión por nosotros" ¿Debe esto impedir que oremos? No. Expongamos nuestras necesidades tal como las sentimos y Dios responderá según Su perfecto conocimiento, Su sabiduría y amor. Depositemos toda nuestra confianza en Dios y Él dará Su aprobación a lo que sea según Su pensamiento, y Su veto a lo que pudiera sernos contrario y dañino.

ORACION: Gracias Oh Padre, porque confiamos en ti, Dios de seguridad y poder. Amén.

GOD AND OUR PRAYERS
1 JOHN 5:1-15
"…if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him."
1 John 5:14-15

The Latin word "veto," which means "I oppose," recognizes and signals the right of one authority to oppose a decision made by another authority. In ancient Rome the magistrates, called tribunes of the people could oppose the decrees of the Senate of the Consuls through their veto power. If this vested authority is wisely and justly applied, it guarantees a good government; as this is how dangerous measures for the State or for the people are prevented. But over and above all of these authorities exists an authority which the believer joyfully acknowledges: that of God the Father. Not only is He just and wise, but also thoroughly good and full of love for His children. When His children pray, they can be sure that any prayer made according to the Father's will, shall be heard. They have His Word in order to know that will, and the Holy Spirit to guide and compel them. He "…helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us…" (Romans 8:26) Should this keep us from praying? No. Let us pray by explaining what we feel to be our needs and God will answer our prayers according to His perfect knowledge, His wisdom and His love. Let us put all our trust in God and He will grant His approval to all that agrees with His mind. Likewise, He will veto anything which could be harmful or contrary to His will.

PRAYER: Thank you Oh Father, because we trust in you, God of protection and power. Amen.

Pray for peace in Congo and safety of mission co-workers

On November 28, the Democratic Republic of Congo held their second-ever democratic elections. While there have been irregularities reported at polling stations, the election was less volatile than some had feared. Now the country is in a tense period awaiting the announcement of the election results on Tuesday, December 6. Some fear there will be violence once the announcement is made.

All of our mission personnel are safe and are working from home or from a safe location. All have contingency plans in place are and are communicating with staff in Louisville daily.

Please pray for peace in Congo, as well as for the continuing safety of our mission coworkers, the churches in Congo and for the Congolese people.

Two prayers to guide you:

Lord, be with our brothers and sisters in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Give them ears to hear truth,
eyes to recognize your face in their neighbors, and
strength to continue to seek justice and fairness for all in their country.

Accompany the walk of our partners, the Presbyterian Community of Congo and the Presbyterian Community of Kinshasa, as they seek to be incarnate witnesses of your truth.

Shelter the people of Congo and our mission coworkers in your arms.

Remind us that when one part of the Body grieves, so do we all.

Unite us as your children so that Christ's peace and love will reign over us all.

We pray this in the name of the Christ child, whose promised coming reminds us always to be hopeful. Amen.

This year St. Andrew's will team up again with other local churches in the West Ashley area to provide a Thanksgiving dinner to needy families, nursing home residents and shut ins. Our shift is from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The event will take place at Forest Park Playground (the Aquacenter) located on Playground Road. We need volunteers to sign up for our shift. Last summer’s General Assembly voted to refrain from holding national meetings in states where new immigration laws make it possible that travel by Presbyterians of color or Hispanic ancestry might subject them to harassment. Indiana’s proposed legislation was modified, thus opening the way for us to hold the conference in Indianapolis. Requiem to take choirs to Charleston, NYC | The Post and Courier, Charleston SC - News, Sports, Entertainment
Making the Requiem sound lovely, then, happens when musicianship and music marry, when breath and sound become one.

Embracing this challenge are the combined choirs of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in West Ashley and Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson. They will perform Rutter's Requiem at 3 p.m. May 15 at St. Andrew's, 712 Wappoo Road.

The performance is a prelude to a May 30 concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, part of a large gathering of singers from about a half-dozen choirs who will have a special experience performing under the baton of the composer himself.

The May 15 presentation is free(though donations are welcome) and will be followed by a reception.

Good morning everyone! Today is the day! Angie Blackburn had a good idea that if some people wanted to carpool to meet at the church around 2:15 pm to leave at 2:30 pm to get to the park. Our shift is from 3pm-4pm today and we should arrive around 2:45 pm to take over from the prior crew. Since we are the last shift we most likely will be helping to clean up too. We will probably be there about 2 hours all total! I have been hearing the advertisements on the radio for all the locations over the last 3 days (West Ashley, downtown and on the islands). I think it will be a big turnout.

Friday movie night, "Amazing Grace"

I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather we've had this week! Perfect!

Just a reminder: the youth are sponsoring a movie night this Friday (Oct. 8) at 7:00 in the fellowship hall.

The movie will be "Amazing Grace," about the life of Wilber Wilberforce and his efforts to end the slave trade in the British Empire.

When the movie was out in theatres a few years ago about 20 people from St. A's saw it together. It's truly a remarkable story of faith, courage and persistence.

The youth will provide the movie snacks.

There is no charge for the movie or snacks, but donations will be accepted. The money raised will be used for the youth mission trip in 2011.

CELEBRATION OF ANIMALS OCTOBER 3RD 5:30 PM

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church will hold a Celebration of the Animals at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 3 in the picnic shelter behind the church at 712 Wappoo Road in West Ashley.
The service will celebrate the role that animals play in our lives.
Pets are welcome as long as they are in carriers or on leashes (no retractable leashes).
At the end of the short service, there will be Yappy Hour, a time for people to fellowship and meet each other's pets. Treats will be provided for humans as well as animals.
Participants are asked to make a nonperishable donation to Pet Helpers.
Also, visitors can bring a picture of pets who are or who have been an important part of their lives.

Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!

This year the 4th of July falls on a Sunday. Having talked with any number of you, I realize that many of you--like me--are concerned about our country and, indeed, the world.

So, on this Sunday, I would like to consider in the sermon ways in which we as the body of Christ can be a blessing to our country and the world. What do we have to offer that would be beneficial to our neighbors in ways that are good and helpful to all people?

In our day, we are all too familiar with the lack of civility in public discourse--instead of having a healthy, robust debate on issues, it seems like it's politically expedient to attack people's characters. The problem is that when we do that, everyone loses! There are no winners, and very little, if anything, productive will ever be accomplished.

So, how can we be an example of a different way, the way of love that leads to abundant life? What will it take for us to be such a community of character is shaped by the Holy Spirit and guided by Jesus Christ for the glory of God?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and questions.

May God continue to watch over and keep us, and guide our steps so that we may...

"Jesus is Alive," Sermon text and questions

Greetings to you all in the name of our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ!

In this season of Easter, we joyfully proclaim that Jesus Christ is Risen! I know this may border on stating the obvious, but to say that Jesus is risen also suggests that Jesus is alive--yes, that means right now, at this very moment!

But here's the kicker, what does it mean for how we live our daily lives that Jesus is alive--not only in this very moment, but in all of our moments? Is he present with us? If so, how? If so, what difference does it make, especially when we face confusing and challenging and painful situations in live?

Our Scripture lessons for this Sunday invite us to consider these questions together. But, as we do, please remember that no one passage from the Bible will answer all of our questions (that's why the Bible has 66 books!). The our lessons for this week are very important in helping us to understand Jesus' mission and our part in it. I invite you to read our Scripture passages for worship this Sunday (May 9) and, as you do, to consider the questions below.

Luke 24:36-53:

What day do the events in this passage take place?
Why were the apostles frightened when Jesus appeared? What was their first thought? How did Jesus respond to them?
What do you think it means to "disbelieve for joy"?
What does Jesus remind them of in verse 44? Why is this important?
What do you think Luke means when he writes, Jesus "opened their minds to understand the Scriptures"?
Would you like for Jesus to open your mind? What would you like to learn from him?
According to verses 47-48, what part do we (God's people) have in God's mission?
What does Jesus promise in verse 49?
What is the significance of verse 51? Do you really think this is important for our lives and our witness to Jesus Christ? How so?
Do you think there is a correlation between praising God and having joy in our lives? What might that correlation be?
When people think of you, does the word "JOY" come to their minds? What do you think does? Would you be willing to ask a friend what comes to mind when they think of you?

1 Corinthians 15:1-14:

How does hearing and receiving the Gospel make a difference in our lives? (verses 1-2)
Where does this "Good News" come from?
Do you believe that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead? What difference does what you believe have in how you live each day? What difference does it have in how you understand your purpose (or mission) in life?
If God raised Jesus from the dead (not just his spirit, but his body!), do you think God can and will raise our bodies? As you think about this question, then consider the implications for how we understand the purpose of our bodies and how we live each day.

As you pray and prepare your heart for worship, may God's Spirit fill you with joy--in believing!

Still haven't picked your summer strawberries yet? They are in full
fruit at Ambrose Farms on Wadmalaw Island! Now you can, and for a good
cause! On Saturday, May 15, St Andrews, James Island Presbyterian and
Crisis Ministries will sponsor the residents of the TLC (Transitional
Living Center) at Crisis Ministries to a morning of strawberry
picking! Anyone who would like to go should meet in the church parking
lot at 8:30 to carpool to Ambrose Farms. You can pick for yourself, or
plan to 'sponsor' a bucket picked by a TLC mother or child! Many
thanks to Babs Ambrose for lowering the picking rate to $1/pound;
thanks to James Island and Crisis Ministries for providing
transportation for the residents; and thanks to the St Andrews 'Yellow
Bucket" for providing funds for each resident to pick a pound of

The Way of the Lamb?

Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!

I hope you and those you love are having a good week.

As we prepare for worship this Sunday (April 25), here are the
Scripture lessons and the sermon title:

Isaiah 55:6-9
Revelation 7:9-17
Sermon title: The Way of the Lamb?

The sermon this week will be based on our text from Revelation. It
will focus on the image of the Lamb of God, particularly on what this
depiction suggests of the nature of God and of God's response to evil
and suffering in the world. As we explore this together, we will then
consider what it means for us today to follow in "The Way of the
Lamb."

While there is much confusion about how to interpret Revelation, there
are characteristics of Apocalyptic literature that enable us to better
understand this book's witness to Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God.

As you no doubt are aware, Apocalyptic literature employs a wide
array of symbols to convey meaning. Since the end of the 18th
century, a number of examples of Apocalyptic literature have been
discovered (most dating back between 200 BC-100 AD). By comparing
these examples, we have discerned common uses of symbols, especially
colors and numbers.

Here are a few that you may find helpful:

Colors:

White = victory
Red = war, conflict
Black = lack of something (like food, for example)
greenish-gray ("pale" in some translations) = death

Numbers:

3 = the realm of the spirit
3.5 = the time evil is allowed to run its course
4 = the created order
7 = complete, mature
10 = fullness, all, total
12 = people of God

Of course, it is important to remember that numbers are used
symbolically that also include multiples and combinations of numbers
(example: 144,000 in Rev.. 7:4).

Questions to consider: Revelation 7:9-17

What is the setting for this vision? Where does it take place?
Who is there? Where are they from? What are they wearing?
What do you think are the significance of the white robes and palm
branches? What does white symbolize in Apocalyptic literature?
What are the people doing in this vision? Are they quiet? Sad? Joyful?
Who is the Lamb? How do you know? Why is this image used? What is
the point of this image?
How did the Lamb respond in his time of tribulation at the hands of
the Roman authorities? Did he trust God? What did God do for the
Lamb?
What have the people in the white robes experienced? (v. 14)
What were the followers of Jesus experiencing at the end of the first
century AD in Asia Minor? Do you think the original hearers of
Revelation would have been able to identify with the people dressed in
white robes? Why? Or why not?
Have you ever suffered as a consequence of your faith in Jesus Christ?
What happened? Did your experience change in any way your
relationship with and understanding of who Jesus Christ is? If so,
how?
Based on the experiences of the church at the end of the first
century, what do you think it means to say "they have washed their

Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!

The youth in our confirmation class are working on their statements of faith, a one page statement that they will share with the Session during the SS time on Sunday, April 11.

Also, on April 11, the confirmation class will share in leading worship. The Rev. Linda Burger will preach and lead some of the prayers, and the youth will lead other parts of the service. That makes it very important for the youth to be here next Wednesday, April 7th, to prepare for leading worship the following Sunday.

On Sunday, April 18th, the youth will be presented to the congregation. We will celebrate their confirmation in worship.

The spaghetti luncheon has been moved back one week to April 25th. This luncheon is a fund raise for the youth mission trip to Tennessee in June.

Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!

Below you will find the lessons (biblical texts for the sermon in the 11:00 AM service this Sunday). I invite you to not only read these passages and consider the questions below, but also to share in our worship services on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (both at 7:00 PM). By hearing the parts of the story in Luke's Gospel that lead up to the first Easter, we can better appreciate the significance of the events of that morning for our lives and for the world.

Isaiah 65:17-25

Does this passage encourage you or offer you hope? Why (why not)?
Have you ever experienced anything like the images in verse 25?

Luke 24:1-12

When you life gets hectic & crazy and your feel disoriented, how do you usually respond? Do you stick to your practices and the things in life that are familiar, or do you just feel like collapsing (emotionally and spiritually, as well as physically)?
Why did the women in this text wait until the first day of the week to go to Jesus' tomb? (see Luke 11:56)
Why did they go to Jesus' tomb? What did they discover when they arrived?
Who are the two men who greeted them? Does Luke's description of their clothes remind you of another story in Luke? (think Luke 9:28-36, also where Jesus speaks with Moses & Elijah about the Exodus (Greek word is Exodon) that he will accomplish in Jerusalem.
What did these men say to the women? Whose words did they quote? (Do you remember 9:51, when "Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem"? The act of setting one's face is to take on the role of prophet (see examples of this in Jeremiah).
What did the women do next?
How did the male apostles respond to the news? ("Idle tale" is a understated way of translating the Greek word Luke uses! If you have other translations of the Bible, check to see if other translations of this word are different from the RSV, which is our per Bible)
Where were the women when Jesus was crucified? Where were the men (male apostles) when Jesus was crucified?
Do you think this (verse 12) is a strange way to end the first Easter Sunday? Do you know people who think the Gospel of Jesus Christ is "an idle tale"? Why do you think they believe that?
What do you believe is the significance of Jesus' resurrection for your life? ...for the world?

In the coming weeks, we will continue to the story as Jesus is present with his followers, gathering and preparing his church for mission.

Parable of the Running Father, Sermon this Sunday

Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! I hope you and your family are well, and are enjoying the beautiful weather we're having so far this week.

Here is info for worship this coming Sunday, March 14:

Sermon title: The Running Father

Old Testament Lesson: Psalm 23

New Testament Lesson: Luke 15:1-2, 11-24

In his book Finding the Lost: Cultural Keys to Luke 15, Dr. Kenneth Bailey provides an outline of this parable. As we pray and prepare for worship this Sunday, I thought it might be helpful to share this with you.

A: Death (verses 11-12)

B: All is Lost (verses 13-14)

C: Rejection (verses 15-16)

D: The Problem? (verse 17)

D': The Solution? (verses 18-20a)

C': Acceptance (verse 20b)

B': All Is Restored (verses 21-22)

D': Resurrection (verses 23-24)

As Dr. Bailey notes in his book, in such passages that use this type of literary structure (inverted parallelism), the key to understanding the passage is in what he lables in this one as C'. In this case, in these verses the Father runs to his son. I encourage you to read these verses and to perhaps make notes that help you felsh out Dr. Bailey's outline of this passage to help you see the flow. As we do, also considering the cultural context in which shame and honor are so very important, we will see how radical and startling the Father's action is in this story.

Here are some questions you might want to consider as well:

Why does Dr. Bailey say that what the son demands of his father is tantamount to death?
Based on what you know about Jews (especially their feeling towards pigs!), what would does it say about the son's condition that he is now envious of pigs who have more to eat than he does?
What might have happened to the son had the father not run to him?
What might have been some of the consequences for the father for running to his son?
How does the father demonstrate his acceptance of his son?
How do we know taht we are accepted by God?
Remember, Jesus tells this parable as he was making his way toward Jerusalem to accomplish his "exodus" (Luke 9:31).. In what ways does this story help us understand what Jesus did for us on the cross?
Does this parable help you to better appreciate what God has done for us in Jesus Christ?
How can we live more out of gratitude to God in our daily living, as opposed to "murmuring" like the Pharisees and scribes (verse 2)?

I hope you and those you love are well. Below you will find the sermon title and lessons for Sunday, February 28.

Sermon title: Love's True Prophet

Lessons:

Psalm 118: This is a psalm of ascension (when going to Jerusalem, it is always uphill). As our ancestors made their way to Jerusalem to share in special celebrations. In the Gospel lesson Jesus quotes Psalm 118:26 (Luke 13:35).

Since this psalm was chanted responsively by our ancerstors as they made their way to Jerusalem, read it out loud. If possible, read it with someone else, taking turn reading alternating verses.

Hebrews 1:1-4: What does it mean to say that God, who spoke to us through prophets, now speaks to us through God's Son, Jesus?

Luke 13:31-35: This is a challenging text to intperpret because some things really are not clear. For example, did Herod really want to kill Jesus? Remember, this Herod is not the same one responsible for the slaughter of the innocents. In the other instances where he is mentioned it is not clear that he has any animosity towards Jesus. Given this question, what is the real agenda of the Pharisees mentioned? What are they up to? And, remember, the Pharisees were a group of people, not all of whom were of one mind--and certainly not of one disposition towards Jesus. So it's hard to say "All Pharisees are like this..."

And, what does Jesus mean when he calls Herod a fox? What does Jesus mean when he compares himself to a mother hen trying to shelter and protect her chicks? What does he have in mind when he says these things? In saying them, is Jesus in some way interpreting what will happen in Jerusalem, namely, his death?

As we prepare for worship this Sunday, think of God's wondrous love that is demonstrated on the cross, in the outstretched arms that were pierced for our transgressions. Are those arms, indeed, like those of a mother hen trying to shelter her chicks?

Remember, this Saturday, Feb. 13, the Women of St. A's are hosting a sale of crafts and art work from Haiti.

The items will be displayed in the fellowship hall from 10:00-2:00.

This is a micro-finance project of the Presbyterian Women of the Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery. The items were that will be for sale were all made by women in Haiti, and the money from the sale of the items will go to them (%100!).

Haiti: Options to Help

Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!

Many people have asked about ways in which we can respond to the disaster in Haiti. One is to pray and recognize that the recovery will take a long, long time. Given the situation in Haiti, this is also an opportunity to rebuild a more just society.

For now, the most helpful thing we can supply is money for relief supplies and relief workers. Here are credible ways that you can contribute (these will also be in the bulletin Sunday):

Hearts with Haiti: www.heartswithhaiti.com

Water Missions International: www.watermissions.org

I know you will want to give and to do so generously. Please do! But also be very careful. In a situation, when there is a disaster of this magnitude, there will be many people trying to exploit the suffering of our brothers and sisters by running scams. So give, but only to organizations that you know!!!

Also, I recognize that many members of St. A's will not get or read this message. For those who do not use computers, you may write checks to St. Andrew's, writing on the memo line or the offering envelop "Haiti relief effort."

If you give through St. A's, the money will be forwarded to the Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery, which will send a check each week that money comes in to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. If you wish to contribute to another organization, please do so directly, either giving online or by mailing a check.

Prayer Vigil: Beginning Saturday morning at 7:00 AM on April 11th, we hold a 24 hour prayer vigil to pray for God's reign of justice and peace to come in its fullness for God's creation and God's people.

This would include having people take one-hour shifts in the sanctuary praying from 7:00 AM on Saturday until 6:45 AM on Sunday morning, when our Sunrise service begins. Times may still be available to sign up. Please call the office to sign up!

My95 Begins This Week!!

My95 begins this week!!

"How can I participate?" you might wonder.

Well, I'm glad you asked! There are basically 4 ways to participate:

1. My95 will include a sermon series that begins (March 1) and goes through April 5 (Palm Sunday). You can participate by sharing in our worship during these weeks.

2. My95 will include a daily devotional that has a passage of Scripture, a brief story, and a prayer. The devotions begin Monday, March 2, and are for 5 weeks. You can pick up a copy in worship Sunday, March 1, or we can send you the devotions electronically (e-mail).

3. My95 will include a weekly Bible study. Most of the Bible study groups will meet in the homes of church members. Pearl and Pastor Spike have organized the church into groups. If you do not know which group you are in, please see an usher Sunday morning. The ushers will have copies of the people in each group.

4. My95 will conclude on April 5th with a covered-dish supper that Sunday evening. We will enjoy a wonderful meal and fellowship around the table, we will share in worship, and we will share ways in which God blessed us and inspired us to Share the Joy of Life in Christ through My95.

My 95 is Coming!

My95 is coming. ... What is it? ... Glad you asked!

My95 is an opportunity for us to discover opportunities that God gives us each day to Share the Joy of Life in Christ in our daily activities and with the people where we live, move and hang out.
Beginning March 1st, Spike will begin a sermon series. The Scripture lessons for the Sunday sermons will then be the lessons for discussion at our home Bible studies. A number of church members will host Bible studies in their homes for My95. The weekly home Bible study will last five weeks. Spike and Pearl have organized home groups according to age and neighborhoods. Your hosts will be in tough in the next week with more info on your group.

In addition, starting March 2nd, we will provide daily devotions for church members to use Monday through Friday of the five weeks of My95.

The daily devotionals and weekly Bible studies can be picked up at our Fat Tuesday pancake supper (February 24th) and the following Sunday, March 1. Also, the devotional and weekly Bible studies can be sent to you electronically (just let me know if you would like for us to send you a copy electronically).
